BMW is one of the most famous car brands in the world, known for its innovative engineering and stylish designs. Classic car auction highlights often feature iconic BMW models, showcasing their enduring appeal and value. Over the years, BMW has produced many iconic models, but some have stood the test of time better than others. Here are four classic BMW cars that still capture attention and remain highly sought after by car enthusiasts.

    1. BMW Isetta

Nicknamed the “bubble car” for its round shape and bubble-like windows, the BMW Isetta is one of the brand’s most unique vehicles. It was introduced to the public in November 1953 at the Turin Motor Show. The Isetta became an instant sensation, as it was the first mass-produced car designed for exceptional fuel efficiency, achieving around 3 litres per 100 km.

In 1955, BMW sold a record 161,728 units, making the Isetta the best-selling car in the world at the time. Its compact design, affordability, and fuel efficiency made it popular among city drivers. Despite its small size, the Isetta made a big impact and remains a symbol of post-war innovation and practicality.

    2. BMW 321

The BMW 321 was a stylish six-cylinder sedan introduced in 1938 as the successor to the BMW 320. It was manufactured until 1941, with production resuming in 1945 at the Eisenach plant, continuing until 1950.

The BMW 321 stood out because it offered different body styles, including a sedan and a cabriolet. During its early years, buyers could purchase the chassis separately and have a custom body built by independent coachbuilders. Its elegant design and versatility made it a popular choice among luxury car buyers.

    3. BMW 328

The BMW 328 is a legendary sports car produced between 1936 and 1940, powered by a 1971 cc M328 straight-6 engine. It made its racing debut at the 1936 Eifelrennen race at Nürburgring, where it not only competed but also won. This victory marked the beginning of the car’s dominance in motorsports.

Over the next few years, the BMW 328 claimed several major racing victories, including:

    • 1937 RAC Tourist Trophy
    • 1937 La Turbie Hill Climb
    • 1939 RAC Rally
    • 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans (5th overall, 1st in class)
    • 1948 Australian Grand Prix

The BMW 328 was named one of the finalists for the Car of the Century by a global panel of automotive journalists. Its sleek design, racing pedigree, and powerful performance have made it one of BMW’s most celebrated classics.

    4. BMW 507

The BMW 507 is a two-door convertible roadster produced from 1956 to 1959. Initially intended for the American market, BMW planned to sell thousands of units. However, due to rising production costs, the car’s price increased from $5,000 to $10,500, making it too expensive for many buyers. As a result, only 252 units were produced, making the BMW 507 a rare and collectable model.

Despite being a financial failure that nearly pushed BMW into bankruptcy, the 507 became a favourite among celebrities. Famous owners included Elvis Presley, Hans Stuck, and Georg Meier. Its elegant design, powerful V8 engine, and exclusivity have made it one of the most desirable BMW classics.
